Job Title: Prep Cook       

Purpose: Volunteer Prep Cooks are responsible for preparing meals to the guests of the mission for the lunch and dinner meal services according to the kitchen staff’s meal plan and health safety guidelines.

Work Location: The Kitchen at the Bread of Life Mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Find out what is being served for the upcoming meal.

  • Prepare cooking ingredients by washing and chopping vegetables, cutting meat etc.

  • Prepare simple dishes such as salads, entrees etc.

  • Maintain proper food handling and safety in the kitchen.

  • Clean and keep the kitchen orderly by washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, taking out trash etc.

  • Use correct food handling techniques.

  • Be a positive influence for guests and staff.

Reports to: Kitchen Supervisor

Time Commitment:

  • The lunch shift is from 9am – 1pm.

  • The dinner shift is from 2pm – 5pm.

  • Minimum 3-month commitment. Volunteering at least one lunch or dinner shift every other week.

  • Groups are welcome to volunteer one day a month for a 6 month commitment.

  • Required 48 hour notice on any shift cancellations.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for helping others, in particular, people who are experiencing homelessness.

  • Willingness to receive and follow directions.

  • Good customer service skills.

  • Ability to navigate stairs, stand for long periods of time, reach, bend, push, pull and lift up to 40 pounds unassisted.

  • Knowledge of preparation techniques for basic sauces, soups, pastry, vegetables, proteins, and starches.

  • Sign the Volunteer Agreement / Release of Liability Form

  • 18 years or older.  Volunteers 14 – 17 can volunteer with adult accompaniment.  Volunteers under 18 need to provide parental consent.
